Seoul weighs ‘contributions’ to US security efforts in Hormuz

SEOUL: South Korea is considering contributing to US security efforts in the Strait of Hormuz, provided its own military readiness remains uncompromised, according to a presidential official speaking to reporters on Friday. The official clarified that no decision has been made yet regarding any potential contributions, which could range from combat participation, non-combat roles, and search operations.

These were merely general descriptions of various options. The official emphasized that South Korea has not decided on actual contributions yet. This came a day after local broadcaster JTBC reported that the South Korean government was leaning toward dispatching troops to assist in Hormuz and reviewing the details before seeking parliamentary approval.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly urged South Korea to provide help for the war in the Middle East, expressing frustration over Seoul's rejection of his request for assistance securing the Strait of Hormuz. The conflict has reached an impasse with Iran maintaining control over the strategic Strait of Hormuz, while Washington presses its counter-blockade of Iranian ports.
