Schiano says Rutgers will 'be a good football team' after stunning opening loss to underdog UMass

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — Rutgers football coach Greg Schiano is the most successful coach in the school's history, but his team's opening loss to underdog UMass has put him under intense scrutiny. UMass, a 29.5-point underdog, defeated the Scarlet Knights 37-21, ending the nation's longest losing streak at 16 games. The Minutemen's 397-yard performance and five turnovers showcased their dominance, marking their first victory over a Power Four opponent.

Rutgers struggled to start defensively, with UMass scoring 30 straight points. The Scarlet Knights' offseason training camp did not seem to pay off as the team was outcoached and outplayed. Schiano admitted his team was not ready to play. This loss, coupled with a roster filled with 56 new players, including 30 transfers and 26 freshmen, has shaken the team's foundation.
