Saturday’s weather: Severe thunderstorms, strong winds and rough seas

The South African Weather Service has issued weather warnings for Saturday, 5 September 2026 across various provinces in South Africa. In the Northern Cape, North West, and Free State, severe thunderstorms are forecasted, leading to potential flooding, strong gusty wind, hail, and structural damage. Parts of KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape face strong coastal winds and rough seas, which may disrupt ports and navigation.

In Gauteng, expect cloudy and cool weather with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Mpumalanga will have morning fog in the escarpment areas, transitioning to partly cloudy and cool conditions. Limpopo will also see morning fog, partly cloudy skies, and isolated showers. The North West province will experience cloudy, windy, and cool to warm weather with scattered showers and thunderstorms.

The Free State can anticipate cloudy, windy, and cool to warm conditions with scattered showers and thunderstorms, though the extreme east may see isolated activity. In the Northern Cape, cloud cover will dominate central and eastern areas, with widespread showers and thunderstorms. The western parts will have more isolated showers and thunderstorms.

In the Western Cape, expect fine to partly cloudy conditions in most areas, but cloudy skies over the northeast. Drizzle may occur in the southeastern parts in the evening. The Eastern Cape's western half will see cloudy skies with light rain near the coast, while the eastern half will be cloudy and cool with light rain and showers. KwaZulu-Natal will experience cold to cool temperatures with isolated showers and rain throughout the region.
