Sabalenka interrupts US Open match over cannabis smell

Aryna Sabalenka overcame a challenging third-round match at the U.S. Open, advancing to the round of 16 in hopes of securing her third consecutive title. The No. 1 seed defeated Kamilla Rakhimova 6-3, 6-4 on Friday, displaying remarkable determination, particularly in the second set which lasted 54 minutes, a minute longer than her previous match.

Sabalenka praised her opponent's performance, stating, "Second she played incredible tennis. She really pushed me so hard in the second set and I love when they bring their best tennis because they really push me to improve." If she continues this form, she could become the first player to win three straight U.S. Open titles since Serena Williams' run from 2012 to 2014.

Sabalenka faces either No. 15 seed Diana Shnaider or Taylor Townsend in the next round. Meanwhile, the Williams sisters will compete in the night session, with sister Venus partnering with No. 15 seed Diana Shnaider for their first-round doubles match against Hao-Ching Chan and Maya Joint. Defending men's champion Carlos Alcaraz also played on Friday, facing off against Sorana Cirstea, the 36-year-old Romanian player contemplating retirement.

Cirstea defeated No. 19 Jasmine Paolini 6-3, 6-3, ensuring at least one more Grand Slam match this season.
