Rivers: NSCDC investigates substance linked to deaths of suspected oil thieves

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Rivers State is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of over 37 youths involved in illegal petroleum tapping at an Okari Jetty in Okrika Local Government Area. According to a statement released by the NSCDC, some of those involved in the illegal tapping reportedly lost their lives due to exposure to hazardous petroleum fumes.

The NSCDC's Special Assistant Media and Communication, Olufemi Ayodele, confirmed that the command is working in collaboration with other security agencies and relevant stakeholders to unravel the mystery behind the incident. The exact nature of the petroleum substance involved in the case is still under technical verification and will only be conclusively determined after proper investigation.

The NSCDC cautioned the public and the media to rely solely on officially verified information regarding the number of casualties, injuries, or missing persons. The command emphasized its commitment to protecting critical national assets, particularly petroleum pipelines, oil and gas facilities, and other strategic economic resources across Rivers State.
