Real Madrid and PSG lose their first games in the domestic leagues

Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain both suffered their inaugural defeats of the domestic league season on Friday. Kylian Mbappé's injury-time penalty was thwarted in a La Liga match against Real Betis, while PSG allowed Monaco to equalize in Ligue 1. In La Liga, Madrid lost 1-0 to Real Betis for the first time since Jose Mourinho returned as coach.

PSG, meanwhile, fell 2-1 to Monaco in Ligue 1, despite leading 1-0 early on. At Monaco, a late goal from Flavio Nazinho and another from Stanis Idumbo secured a win for the hosts. Betis stunned Madrid with a goal from newcomer Troy Parrott, who capitalized on a save by Betis goalkeeper Álvaro Vallés. Madrid had won their first three games in La Liga, while Monaco was leading the league with three wins.

PSG had also drawn two of its first three games and lost the French Super Cup to Lens the previous month. The French champions had recently extended contracts for coach Luis Enrique and several players.
