Putin announced battlefield encirclements that the evidence doesn’t show, but Russia’s real offensive is accelerating elsewhere

On September 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced in a late-night press conference that Ukrainian forces had been encircled in two locations in the Kharkiv region and that the city of Sviatohirsk had been captured. However, these claims do not align with the evidence, which shows that Russian forces have only recently begun advancing in these areas.

In the Kharkiv region, Russian troops have indeed broken through from two directions southeast of Vovchansk, capturing Bilyi Kolodiaz, but they have not yet encircled the settlement. The nearest Russian positions are still several kilometers to the north of Bilyi Kolodiaz. Similarly, Putin's claim that Sviatohirsk had been captured is not supported by recent evidence.

While Russian forces have made gains in the area, they have not yet taken control of the city or established a complete encirclement. Overall, Putin's optimism about these operations is not detached from reality, as Russia has accelerated its offensive in late summer and early fall, pushing Ukrainian defenses into crisis along several important axes.

However, Putin's claims of significant battlefield encirclements appear to be overstated, and the actual situation on the ground remains complex and fluid.
