Political parties in Jigawa sign peace accord ahead of 2027 elections

Political parties and key stakeholders in Jigawa State have recently inked a peace accord ahead of the upcoming election season. This agreement was forged on Thursday during a meeting chaired by Commissioner of Police Tijjani Murtala, alongside representatives from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), political party leaders, their executives, and media professionals.

Commissioner Murtala urged all parties to adopt collective responsibility, mutual respect, political tolerance, and strict observance of electoral laws throughout the electioneering period. He emphasized the need to prevent any acts that could jeopardize peace and public order, such as hate speech, inflammatory comments, vote-buying, violence, intimidation, and the destruction of campaign materials.

The Commissioner assured that law enforcement agencies would ensure adequate security and maintain order before, during, and after the elections. The INEC delegation, led by Administrative Secretary Ibrahim Idris, also emphasized the importance of adhering to electoral laws, rules, and guidelines.

In response to the call for unity, the participating political parties signed the peace accord, reaffirming their dedication to peaceful political engagement, respect for democratic values, and the rejection of violence throughout the election process. The police command hailed the accord as a strong testament to the shared commitment of all political actors and stakeholders to maintaining peace and security in Jigawa State.

The command urged residents to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and vigilant, while simultaneously encouraging political parties and their supporters to view the electoral process as a battleground of ideas and programs rather than a fight.
