An Indonesian woman was sentenced to six years in prison in Melbourne, Australia, after being found guilty of being trafficked and physically abused by a Malaysian man. The case involved Chee Kit Chong, 47, who was convicted by Melbourne Magistrate Court judge Michael Cahill for forcing his victim into servitude and assaulting her between February and October 2022.

Cahill described Chong's actions as cruel and inhumane, noting that the defendant treated his victim like a slave and treated her as his property. According to ABC News, Chong is likely to be considered for parole in 2030 and is expected to be deported back to Malaysia after serving his sentence. The victim, a 60-year-old woman, was found guilty of trafficking between February and October 2022.

Her husband, Angie Liaw, was cleared of charges of aiding or facilitating Chong's trafficking of the woman, as she reportedly did not attend the hearing.

Chong allegedly formed a master-servant relationship with the Indonesian woman, whom his identity has not been disclosed, after meeting her at a church in Malaysia in 2015. In 2017, the woman moved to Australia to live with Chong and his partner, but they returned to Malaysia without informing the victim, causing her to lose her home for four years.

In 2021, the couple informed the victim that they had returned to Melbourne and offered her a job for a month. The victim agreed to live with them starting early 2022 after Liaw gave birth to their second child, only to be supposed to stay for a month.

Cahill stated that Chong denied the victim proper food and medical care throughout the duration of the offense and controlled her movement, leaving her with little sleep. He also claimed that Chong attacked the victim for minor mistakes and kicked her head against the wall. Additionally, it was revealed that Chong forced the victim to borrow money from relatives to pay for rent and hospital bills for the birth of their second child.

The victim escaped the home in October 2022 and was reportedly missing for several days before police found her and took her to the hospital, where the case was uncovered. The woman died of natural causes in 2024.
