Oil prices mixed at close amid Middle East tensions

The United States intends to maintain a military presence in the Middle East until 2027, according to a Pentagon letter sent to deployed troops' families. This extended deployment comes amid the Iran conflict, which has now entered its seventh month. The US Central Command (Centcom) conducted strikes on various targets inside Iran on Tuesday, while Iran retaliated with attacks on US-linked facilities across the Gulf.

These strikes resulted in 18 deaths and 142 injuries, as reported by Iranian officials. President Trump's administration plans to keep a significant military force in the region to maintain flexibility in decision-making regarding the ongoing war. The US currently has 50,000 troops stationed in the area, alongside 19 warships, air-defense units, fighter squadrons, and paratroopers.

The primary mission of these forces involves intercepting Iranian missiles, safeguarding commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, and blockading Iranian ports and coastal regions. In addition to defensive operations, US troops are also prepared for more aggressive military actions if President Trump decides to escalate the conflict.

The prolonged deployment is straining US service members and their families, while maintenance delays could extend over several years. Military units have had their deployment periods extended from nine months to 12 months, with some units spending over a year in the Middle East. Furthermore, the US Navy has 19 warships in the region, including two aircraft carriers and 13 guided-missile destroyers, with some remaining at sea for extended periods rather than taking regular breaks.

US President Trump has been focusing on economic pressure, hoping it will compel Iran to negotiate. His administration launched Operation Economic Outcast, aiming at Iran's key economic sectors, such as oil, shipping, aviation, and digital assets. Despite Trump's optimism over controlling the Hormuz Strait and Iran's apparent economic collapse, Tehran has not indicated any intention of backing down.

The US and Iran continue to exchange fire, asserting control over the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The latest confrontation saw US forces strike nearly 60 Iranian military sites along the waterway, targeting air-defense systems, radar installations, maritime infrastructure, mine-laying facilities, and communications networks. Additionally, the US guided 40 commercial vessels through the Strait, marking the highest number protected in a single operation during the ongoing conflict.
