Ogun Govt, NEMA conduct flood disaster simulation exercise

The Ogun State Government, along with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), recently conducted a flood disaster simulation exercise to enhance emergency response in the region. This was the final day of the three-day simulation, aiming to bolster the readiness and coordination of stakeholders in dealing with flooding and other emergencies.

The exercise brought together emergency responders, security personnel, healthcare professionals, community leaders, and other relevant stakeholders to assess their preparedness and response capabilities.

During the event held in Odo Apo, Owu area of Abeokuta, Governor Dapo Abiodun emphasized the importance of continuous preparedness. He highlighted that effective disaster management necessitates planning, early warning systems, and swift actions. Speaking through his Deputy, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, the Governor reaffirmed the state government's commitment to safeguarding lives and property, especially in flood-prone communities. He urged residents to heed early warnings and relocate from danger zones if necessary.

The flood disaster simulation exercise plays a crucial role in strengthening the state's emergency preparedness and response framework. It offers stakeholders the chance to evaluate their capabilities, improve communication, and pinpoint areas in need of further improvement, according to Governor Abiodun.

Speaking on behalf of the President, Mrs K Audu praised the organizers and participating agencies for their dedication to disaster risk reduction and emergency preparedness. She stressed that the Federal Government places significant importance on enhancing the capacity of states to effectively respond to natural disasters, particularly flooding, which continues to endanger communities, livelihoods, and critical infrastructure nationwide.

NEMA's Director-General, Mrs Zubaida Umar, represented by the Director of Search and Rescue, Air Commodore Bashir Usman, explained that the simulation aimed to test existing emergency response plans and enhance inter-agency coordination. The exercise included practical demonstrations of search and rescue operations, evacuating simulated flood victims, providing medical assistance, and coordinating among agencies.

Additionally, residents in flood-prone areas received relief packages consisting of rice, garri, vegetable oil, and mattresses.
