North Korean youth rush marriage for a shot at overseas work

North Korean youth in North Hamgyong province are hastening to get married in 2026 in pursuit of overseas work opportunities. Officials now prefer married applicants over singles, likely aiming to limit the risk of dispatched workers defecting abroad. Daily NK reports that young people across the province are rushing to marry to travel overseas and earn money.

Going abroad has become trendy among the province’s youth in recent years. North Korea has already dispatched many workers abroad this year, with recruitment for more assignments ongoing. Candidates for overseas assignments must undergo a strict vetting process, examining family background, ideological reliability, marital status, and health.

Officials can disqualify candidates with any issues, including a spouse’s disapproval of South Korean films. Marital status has become the determining factor in final selection, as officials can still demote unmarried candidates who meet other criteria. Some lose their spot entirely to married candidates, who are preferred to prevent workers from defecting.

One woman in her late 20s from Kimchaek was dropped from the final candidate list last June despite her clean background and health. Her unmarried status was the deciding factor. As this trend spreads, young North Koreans are getting married to boost their chances of overseas dispatch. Economic pressures have made it difficult for young North Koreans to earn substantial money independently.

Those without well-off families often struggle to build capital, and exchange rates have been squeezing traders' margins. Overseas dispatch is now seen as the only realistic path to quick money. This perspective is influencing decisions about marriage. However, some young people are rushing into marriages without much thought solely to qualify for overseas work.

The trend has raised concerns about the stability of such marriages, especially among those from families with poor songbun, the state-assigned class background. Exclusion from overseas dispatch has bred discontent toward the state and party.
