NMMC Steps Up NICU Monitoring, Plans More Incubators At Civic Hospitals In Navi Mumbai

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is enhancing the monitoring and maintenance of Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) at its public hospitals in Vashi, Nerul, and Airoli. Specialised agencies inspect these facilities every three months to ensure the critical equipment and facilities remain functional. The NMMC operates three public hospitals, two mother-and-child hospitals, and 26 primary urban health centres that serve residents of Navi Mumbai and surrounding areas.

NICUs are set up for newborns needing intensive care, especially those with low birth weights. The civic body has appointed a specialised agency to handle maintenance and repairs of the NICU equipment and systems, which are inspected every three months. The Vashi hospital currently has 16 operational incubators, Airoli has 18, and Nerul has 15.

The NMMC plans to expand newborn care facilities by increasing the number of incubators in the upcoming months. The tender process for adding more incubators is underway, with the administrative body anticipating the new facilities to be ready within two to three months. Dr Rajesh Mhatre, Medical Health Officer at NMMC, highlighted that a specialised agency is in place for the upkeep and repair of NICU equipment and systems, and these units undergo inspections every three months to ensure they meet the required working conditions.
