NCAA Backs eSIM to Address Air Passengers’ Connectivity Challenges

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has granted approval to Univasa Nigeria Limited's eSIM service, recognizing its potential to resolve internet connectivity issues faced by Nigerian passengers traveling abroad. NCAA Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr. Michael Achimugu, revealed this during a stakeholders' engagement in Abuja.

Mr. Achimugu's decision was influenced by an assessment of the service and feedback from users, aimed at enhancing the travel experience for passengers. The NCAA sees this eSIM service as a solution to the recurring connectivity challenges that Nigerian travelers encounter, particularly when purchasing data upon arrival in foreign countries.

The initiative aligns with the federal government's policy of supporting local businesses providing solutions to identified needs. NCAA Director-General, Festus Keyamo, is a known user of the service, along with several aviation sector CEOs.

Abdulmalik added that the NCAA is interested in the initiative from the perspective of passenger experience, stating that improved connectivity would facilitate communication and movement for travelers. Univasa's Managing Director and CEO, Dr. Ben Adeniyi, explained that the eSIM service offers connectivity in over 150 countries and 200 destinations, catering to international travelers who require constant communication.

The P-SIM is designed for phones that do not support eSIM technology. Adeniyi also highlighted the service's compatibility with multiple networks globally, allowing for seamless switching when network quality degrades.

Dr. Halimat Adediran, a Vice President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and a Univasa partner, mentioned that the service offers an alternative to purchasing data or roaming services in destination countries, providing a more cost-effective solution for travelers.
