NBA insider on Lakers' plans for Jarred Vanderbilt moving forward

The Los Angeles Lakers have been actively reducing their roster, with the exception of Jarred Vanderbilt, a 6-foot-8 forward who is a versatile defender and capable rebounder but struggles offensively. The team attempted to trade Vanderbilt to the Atlanta Hawks for Jonathan Kuminga, but Kuminga ultimately signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves, leaving the Lakers with no choice but to retain Vanderbilt.

According to NBA insider Sean Deveney, Vanderbilt may return to the Lakers' rotation next season. The team has been seeking a buyer for Vanderbilt's $12.4 million contract, but no one has shown interest. Vanderbilt averaged 4.4 points and 4.5 rebounds in 17.4 minutes per game, shooting 47.1% from the field and 29.3% from three-point range.

However, his playing time diminished after the playoffs, and he was often shuffled in and out of the rotation by Coach JJ Redick. When Vanderbilt joined the team in February 2023, he was a key player and a fan favorite due to his defensive energy and rebounding abilities. However, his inability to shoot three-pointers, grab in the paint, and convert layups in traffic led to a decline in his role on the team.

As Vanderbilt becomes an expiring contract next summer, his trade value may improve, potentially benefiting the Los Angeles Lakers in their pursuit of a championship contender.
