Mistrial declared in Lindsay Clancy child killings case

A judge in Massachusetts has declared a mistrial in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial after jurors were unable to reach a unanimous verdict on whether the 36-year-old former nurse was criminally responsible for the deaths of her three young children. The mistrial occurred on the seventh day of deliberations, leaving the case unresolved and allowing prosecutors to retry Clancy at a later date.

Clancy's defense argued that she suffered from a rare condition called postpartum psychosis, a mental illness linked to the stress, sleep deprivation, and hormonal changes that follow childbirth, which caused her to kill her three children: a five-year-old boy, a three-year-old boy, and an eight-month-old baby. Prosecutors, however, maintained that Clancy acted deliberately when she strangled the children with exercise bands on January 24, 2023.

The trial, which has generated intense public interest and sparked discussions around maternal mental health, was marked by a dramatic shift in late deliberations when Judge William Sullivan announced a mistrial before quickly reversing course and giving Clancy's defense team a chance to appeal to a higher court. Clancy's mental health had reportedly deteriorated following the birth of her youngest child, with her experiencing severe anxiety, sleep deprivation, and what she described as "brain fog."

She sought medical help and was briefly admitted to a psychiatric hospital, but left the facility 19 days before the killings. Following her release, Clancy was found dead by suicide in the basement of her family's home in Duxbury, Massachusetts.
