Meth calls for coordinated plan to make AI create jobs

Minister Nomakhosazana Meth, from the Department of Employment and Labour, emphasized the urgent need for a unified approach to ensure AI technology fosters job creation without exacerbating economic disparities. She inaugurated the 31st annual Nedlac Summit in Pretoria, where business leaders, government officials, labor representatives, and civil society convened under the theme of advancing inclusive growth and decent work in the age of artificial intelligence.

Meth stressed that social dialogue remains the most effective way to ensure a fair transition for all workers, stating that collaboration among all stakeholders—government, business, labor, and communities—is essential. She highlighted the necessity of sharing insights, committing to actionable strategies, and formulating policy recommendations aimed at inclusive growth and social justice.

Meth stressed that the summit should not be a concluding discussion but rather a catalyst for ongoing action. She reiterated the importance of harnessing AI's transformative potential in a manner that is inclusive, equitable, and sustainable, urging the Nedlac social partners to play their roles in this digital transition.
