Meet five of the 2027 Colorado Teacher of the Year finalists

Five of the eight finalists for the 2027 Colorado Teacher of the Year award have been announced by the Colorado Department of Education. The finalists were selected from an initial pool of 21 semifinalists. Each finalist will receive a $1,000 check from the department and the Boettcher Foundation, while their schools will also receive $500 from the foundation.

Among the finalists is Jason Cochrane, a science and cybersecurity teacher at Mountain Vista High School in Douglas County. Cochrane's curiosity for science and technology empowers his students to explore new horizons. Douglas County School District Superintendent Erin Kane praised Cochrane, stating that his selection is a testament to his phenomenal work as an educator.

Arjun Sahdev, a fifth-grade teacher at Minnequa Elementary School in Pueblo School District 60, was also among the finalists. Pueblo 60 Superintendent Barbara Kimzey highlighted Sahdev's passion for his learners and his professional expertise. The Pueblo community has been inspired by his commitment to using his talents to support young students.

Jessie Russett, a sixth-grade English language arts teacher at Trinidad Middle School in Trinidad School District, was another finalist. Trinidad Superintendent Olivia Bachicha called Russett a breath of fresh air, praising her dedication to students and the community. She serves as a true leader of learning for students and ESL communities.

Viviana Martínez, a Spanish and world language teacher at Vista PEAK Preparatory High School in Aurora Public Schools, completed the list of finalists. Aurora Superintendent Michael Giles Jr. emphasized Martínez's ability to create an inclusive culture in her classroom, creating an indelible impact that extends beyond the school doors.

She is on track to become the next Colorado Teacher of the Year, joining a prestigious group of educators who serve as ambassadors for teachers and participate in education policy discussions.
