Malaysia Games champion Haziq earns BAM audition

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Games men's singles champion Haziq Najib has been granted a chance to train with the national squad in a bid to earn a spot in the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) system. National singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen announced that Haziq will undergo a one-week training program at the Academy Badminton Malaysia starting next week.

However, Jonassen emphasized that this training period is merely the initial step in BAM's evaluation process, with Haziq's dedication and ability to improve during training sessions being crucial factors in determining whether he will be considered for a national call-up. Jonassen stressed that simply performing well in tournaments is not enough; consistent improvement through practice is essential for development.

The Malaysia Games U-21 champion had already been invited to train with the national team following his victory in the second leg of the National Under-21 Championships, prior to his triumph at the Malaysia Games. Jonassen plans to discuss Haziq's aspirations and long-term goals during the training stint, insisting that a mere focus on tournament play is insufficient.

He emphasized the need for a strong desire and a clear vision for one's future in the sport. Jonassen also noted that Haziq could be invited for multiple training sessions before BAM decides on a permanent offer, citing Tan Kean Wei as an example who underwent five or six training periods before earning his national squad call-up last year.
