Lunenburg water conservation continues after Dares Lake dam breach

Water conservation efforts in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia continued for a second day after a dam breach at Dares Lake overflowed the town's main water supply, forcing school and business closures. Mayor Jamie Myra reported that the newly constructed dam gave way on Wednesday afternoon after a crack formed, causing water to enter the pump building and halt water supply to the town's treatment facility.

Many businesses, including cafes, daycares, and a major employer High Liner Foods, were affected by the closures. Myra explained that if the issue is not resolved within the next 12 to 24 hours, the town could lose hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue during the Labour Day weekend. As of Friday, two out of three pumps in the building were operational but not at full capacity.

The mayor praised the town's efforts in conserving water and expressed relief that residents and business owners have been cooperative. Property owners, such as Connor Veinot, are monitoring the situation closely as the dam breach has caused significant water rise and potential flooding. The cause of the dam's failure is still under investigation, with Myra working alongside provincial officials to determine the circumstances.
