Lee says banks have key role to play in five-year plan

Chief Executive John Lee highlighted the vital role the banking sector plays in Hong Kong's development and integration into the country's long-term prosperity. Addressing an Association of Banks event, Lee emphasized that the banking industry has been essential to the city's financial resilience. With the unveiling of Hong Kong's first five-year plan, Lee stressed that the banking sector is a crucial partner in realizing the strategic vision outlined in the plan.

This plan aims to leverage Hong Kong's status as a super connector and super value-adder, bridging mainland capital and enterprises with global markets while attracting international capital, technology, and talent.

Lee called for continued cooperation between the government and the banking sector, focusing on four key areas: expanding offshore renminbi business, deepening financial connectivity, empowering the real economy and promoting innovation and technology through finance, and enhancing financial security and market integrity. Additionally, Lee urged the banking sector to actively participate in driving the development of the Northern Metropolis.

He expressed confidence that the association and the banking sector would play a pivotal role in financing large-scale infrastructure projects in the Northern Metropolis, unlocking the opportunities created by this burgeoning economic engine for Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area.
