Korle Bu begins talks to acquire robotic surgical system

The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Ghana is in talks with a team from a Kolkata, India hospital to acquire a robotic surgical system. The Indian medical team, comprising doctors, will assist in supplying the system and training Korle Bu staff to use the technology. This comes after Dr Yakubu Seidu Adam, the hospital's chief executive, announced plans to introduce robotic surgery at the institution during the launch of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month on September 2.

Dr Adam emphasized that robotic surgery is crucial for the future of surgical care and that Korle Bu must keep up with advancements in modern medicine. He also noted that some Ghanaians currently travel abroad to access robotic surgery due to its lack of availability locally, suggesting that the acquisition could expand advanced surgical services at Korle Bu and reduce the need for such treatment outside the country.

The negotiations encompassed strengthening Korle Bu's renal and liver transplantation programs, as well as the potential supply of breastmilk fortifiers and nutritional milk supplements for premature babies. Dr Adam encouraged hospital staff to embrace the proposed introduction of robotic surgery and support efforts to position Korle Bu as a leader in advanced surgical care in Ghana.

The discussions represent the first step towards introducing robotic-assisted surgery at Ghana's leading teaching hospital, pending the completion of necessary arrangements.
