Kate Koval speaks out after LSU’s Kim Mulkey kicks Ukrainian to curb for Russian player

Over the course of four years since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Kate Koval has faced immense challenges. While teenagers in the United States experienced some disruption to their high school lives during the COVID-19 pandemic, Koval has not been able to return to her home country as she once knew it. When Russia invaded Ukraine, less than a year after Koval moved to the United States to pursue her basketball dreams, the emotional impact on her became deeply personal.

This is why she ultimately decided to leave LSU and seek a new team. LSU head coach Kim Mulkey stated that Koval's departure was due to personal reasons, but it was her own decision to recruit Russia's Anna Minaeva that caused this situation. Minaeva, a 6'5" center, plays professional basketball in Moscow and there is no information about her personal views on the conflict.

Mulkey was fully aware of the painful consequences her actions would have on the locker room and those affected by the war, and proceeded to recruit Minaeva anyway. Koval's father is still fighting in Ukraine, and for her, true courage would be putting human decency ahead of wins. Instead, Mulkey chose to promote Minaeva's bravery while ignoring the hardships Koval and her family continue to face.

Koval believes that the bravest thing a basketball coach could have done was to suspend the recruiting process and prioritize her players' well-being over acquiring new talent. As the NCAA transfer window has closed, Koval must seek an exemption to transfer to a new team. In this decision, Koval demonstrates an immense risk in standing by her principles, hoping that she will be granted an exemption and find a team that appreciates her as a person rather than just a player on the roster.
