Jonassen keeps faith as Jun Hao struggles

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's national singles coaching director, Kenneth Jonassen, remains hopeful for improvements from his player, Leong Jun Hao, despite the latter's continued early exits in recent tournaments. Jun Hao, currently ranked as the world No. 27, suffered his 12th early exit this season, losing to Indonesia's world No. 1, Jonatan Christie, in the first round of the China Masters.

While Jun Hao has demonstrated progress by pushing several top opponents in close matches, his coach acknowledges that tangible results are still elusive. Jonassen emphasizes the importance of winning more than one match at a tournament, stating that reaching the quarter-finals of a Super 750 or Super 1000 event would place Jun Hao among the best eight players in the world that week.

Despite Jun Hao's struggles, the Dane, who oversees Malaysia's men's singles squad, maintains confidence in the 27-year-old's potential to turn his fortunes around. Jonassen commends Jun Hao's commitment, communication, and the level of effort he shows in training, noting that his focus on the small details in practice is improving.

He also mentions that Jun Hao has made positive changes following earlier concerns over his discipline, resulting from a warning letter. However, Jonassen believes Jun Hao should have performed better against Christie, describing the defeat as a missed opportunity, despite Christie's world No. 1 status. He further expresses his belief that Jun Hao must ultimately prove his ability to challenge and defeat top-10 players to fulfill the expectations associated with being Malaysia's top men's singles shuttler.
