Japan's top currency diplomat: on alert to currency moves

Tokyo, September 4 - Japan's top currency diplomat, Atsushi Mimura, expressed on Friday his continued vigilance towards exchange-rate fluctuations. Mimura informed reporters that his team maintains constant communication with U.S. authorities. Following Mimura's statements, the dollar experienced a decline, reaching 155.305 yen, as market participants remained cautious regarding the possibility of another yen-buying intervention by the authorities.

The yen's sharp increase of 2 percent against the dollar on Thursday sparked speculation that Japanese officials had intervened to bolster the currency. However, there was no concrete evidence supporting such official action. Mimura's Friday remarks were in line with his previous Thursday comments, in which he reiterated that he was not entirely confident about the recent movements in the yen.
