Israel releases four more detainees to Lebanon through Red Cross

Four additional detainees captured by Israeli forces in southern Lebanon were transferred to Lebanese authorities on Friday, with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) playing a facilitative role, according to security sources. The group comprised four Lebanese nationals and one Syrian citizen, currently residing in the city of Tyre while awaiting medical assessments and questioning by Lebanese intelligence.

The release of these detainees follows the earlier transfer of one Lebanese individual, Malek Ghazi, on Thursday, who was held since October 2025 in the Rashaya region. Ghazi was released as a goodwill gesture from Israel towards Lebanon amid ongoing, albeit stalled, direct talks between the two nations.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun welcomed the US role in negotiating the release, stating that it validated the Lebanese stance and emphasized the importance of completing the necessary steps outlined in the tripartite framework. This move underscores a renewed diplomatic effort between Israel and Lebanon as the United States endeavors to stimulate further dialogue prior to potential negotiations in Rome.

The Israeli government announced the release of these five Lebanese civilians, who were apprehended in areas under its control in southern Lebanon. Following interrogation, it was confirmed that they were not affiliated with any terrorist organizations and had not participated in any terrorist activities, thus justifying their release. The Israeli Prime Minister's office disclosed that the decision was made after considering the circumstances.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) highlighted the plight of numerous Lebanese families who remain uncertain about the whereabouts of their loved ones who might be detained, deceased, or otherwise missing. The organization reiterated the necessity for information regarding conflict-related detainees and access to them.

Over 30 individuals are believed to have been abducted by Israeli forces from southern Lebanon since 2023. The ICRC has been unable to establish contact with these individuals, underscoring the ongoing concerns over the fate of those taken.
