Interior Minister directs Immigration Commanders to crack down on illegal immigration, street begging

Ghana's Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has instructed Regional Commanders of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) to intensify the fight against illegal immigration and the rising issue of street begging. During a meeting in Accra, the Minister expressed worries over the growing number of individuals engaging in street begging, labeling it as unlawful and a potential threat to national security.

Addressing the officers, Mr. Mohammed-Mubarak emphasized that street begging is prohibited in Ghana and poses serious security risks. He emphasized the crucial role of the Ghana Immigration Service in overseeing the entry and exit of people into and out of the country, urging them to stay vigilant and strengthen their efforts in safeguarding Ghana’s territorial integrity.

The Minister cautioned Immigration Officers against actions that could jeopardize the country’s immigration system, adding that anyone found guilty will face severe punishment according to the law.

Moreover, Mr. Mohammed-Mubarak directed the Regional Commanders to relay this message to all officers nationwide and ensure adherence to these guidelines by personnel. To tackle illegal immigration, he encouraged Immigration Officers to join forces with landlords and other relevant parties in identifying and appropriately documenting tenants residing in different communities.

The Interior Minister assured the public of the Ministry of the Interior’s dedication to addressing illegal immigration and street begging while reinforcing efforts to maintain peace, security, and public safety across Ghana.
