In Burkina Faso, Sky Dragon 30 missiles point to China’s military export inroads

In Burkina Faso, footage released by the nation's president's office showcases what observers identify as a Chinese Sky Dragon 30 surface-to-air missile being tested. This marks the first time the Sahel state has publicly demonstrated this short-to-medium range missile system. The missile, developed by China's Norinco, has a range of 30km and is designed for low-maintenance point defense against multiple targets.

The footage, part of a documentary series marking Burkina Faso's military leader Ibrahim Traoré's fourth year in power, was released on the president's 100th day in office. Song Zhongping, a Chinese military commentator and former PLA instructor, explained that countries previously relying on Western powers are now seeking independence and self-armament by purchasing arms from Russia and China.

These include Burkina Faso, which is acquiring the missiles for counterterrorism and decolonisation efforts. The Sky Dragon 30, first shown at the Zhuhai air show in 2018, has a multi-stage guidance system that enhances its engagement range and resistance to electronic countermeasures. The missile's launch vehicle could also be used to deploy the longer-range Sky Dragon 50 missile, with a 50km range.

Burkina Faso's political and security landscape has been reshaped in recent years, with the country severing ties with France and Western allies and strengthening relationships with China and Russia. China has been equipping Burkina Faso's military and positioning itself for greater influence in the Sahel region. Other Chinese military equipment deliveries to Burkina Faso include armoured vehicles and artillery systems.

Meanwhile, China has also been deepening ties with neighboring Mali and Niger, amid a shift in Western influence in the region.
