IIT Madras incubated centre launches AI models in Indian languages

Bodhan AI, a Centre of Excellence in AI for Education at IIT Madras, in collaboration with AI4Bharat, a research lab within the institution, has unveiled four foundational AI models tailored for Indian languages. These models will be made accessible to the technology and education sectors through open-weight releases and hosted APIs. The comprehensive suite encompasses speech recognition, speech generation, machine translation, and optical character recognition.

This development presents a significant opportunity for government entities and public institutions to leverage multilingual AI capabilities for educational and public-service applications, using locally developed infrastructure, as reported by IIT Madras. Furthermore, EdTech companies can now seamlessly integrate Indian language AI functionalities into their offerings via APIs, eliminating the necessity to construct foundational models from the ground up.
