Germany's alliance against the far right

In Germany, the fight against far-right extremism demands great courage and vigilance. Keerthana Kuperan, a political advisor for DaMOst, an organization supporting migrant groups, has also witnessed a significant impact on her work due to the rise of right-wing extremism.

Her team has implemented strict security protocols, such as limiting staff presence after 6 p.m. and securing posters in rural areas. DaMOst has observed a shift in the political landscape towards the right, particularly in Saxony-Anhalt, a region with a low percentage of foreigners. This shift has led to a discrediting of democratic networks, affecting funding and job opportunities for activists.

Miriam Zeller, a councilwoman from Stendal, who is part of the Green Party, has faced intense hostility since the Greens took office, including accusations of being a warmonger. For individuals like Pankonin, Kuperan, and Zeller, more protection is needed against the threat of losing their jobs if the AfD were to come to power. The Together for Democracy alliance aims to support those targeted by far-right extremists, offering assistance in cases of hate campaigns, threats, and legal challenges.

The alliance includes major actors like the German Trade Union Federation (DGB) and Greenpeace, and seeks to train members in constitutional and civil service law to defend themselves against unlawful orders. Andre Lehmann, from the Queer Diversity Association, emphasizes the importance of this alliance in supporting queer individuals and organizations facing attacks on Pride events and other democracy initiatives.
