German Ambassador pays courtesy call on Defence Minister, explores stronger defence cooperation

The German Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Frederik Landshöft, visited the Minister for Defence, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, at The Square to congratulate him on his appointment and discuss ways to bolster defense and security cooperation between Ghana and Germany. Hon. Adjei welcomed the Ambassador and expressed gratitude for Germany's long-standing partnership, highlighting its consistent support for Ghana, particularly in enhancing the capabilities of the Ghana Armed Forces.

Ghana remains committed to deepening bilateral defense and security relations with Germany, thanks to support from the German Military Advisory Group and various military training programs that have significantly boosted the professional development and operational readiness of the Ghana Armed Forces. The Minister welcomed increased German collaboration in areas such as military training, officer exchange programs, and technical assistance, including enhanced cooperation in naval training, surveillance, and intelligence sharing, which are crucial for addressing Ghana's evolving maritime and national security needs.

He acknowledged Germany's vital role in promoting peace and stability across Africa and expressed readiness to further deepen cooperation in intelligence sharing and border security to tackle emerging threats, especially violent extremism in the West African sub-region. Ambassador Landshöft noted that Germany's longstanding partnership with Ghana had led to several initiatives, including the Signal School at Burma Camp, a maintenance hub in Tamale, a satellite station in Bolgatanga, the Dog Academy, and support for the Airfield.

The upcoming maintenance hub in Tamale, scheduled for commissioning in October 2026, will bolster the logistical and operational capabilities of the Ghana Armed Forces. Ambassador Landshöft emphasized Germany's commitment to supporting Ghana's defense and security institutions and praised the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, for his approach to addressing regional security challenges in the Sahel.

He underscored the importance of continued cooperation between Ghana and Germany in promoting peace, stability, and security in the West African sub-region.
