Five-year-old girl drowns in uncovered borehole at Ansaful

A tragic incident unfolded at Ansaful in Winneba, Central Region, when a five-year-old girl tragically drowned after falling into an uncovered borehole. The unfortunate event transpired during an ongoing one-week program at a nearby Christ Apostolic Church. Worried relatives and neighbors initiated a search for the missing child around 5 p.m., following her reported disappearance.

Their suspicions were heightened when one of her slippers was discovered near the borehole, while another was found inside, suggesting she may have inadvertently fallen into the facility. The Ghana National Fire Service promptly responded to the scene, utilizing their resources to pump out water and facilitate the recovery operation.

The girl's body was eventually retrieved using a ladder from inside the borehole. The Police Service and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) collaborated closely in the retrieval efforts before the body was transferred to the police for transportation to the mortuary. Acting District Officer 1 Kwasi Attifah confirmed that police investigations are underway to determine the circumstances leading to the child's death, with the findings expected to be disclosed at a later date.

He strongly advised parents and guardians to maintain constant vigilance over their children, especially in potentially hazardous areas, and urged construction workers to ensure proper security measures are implemented to prevent such catastrophic accidents from occurring in the future.
