FC Cincinnati parts ways with Matt Miazga ahead of D.C. United game

FC Cincinnati has parted ways with veteran center back Matt Miazga ahead of their home game against D.C. United on September 5. The veteran center back confirmed his exit on Instagram on September 4. Miazga was set to become a free agent at the end of the 2026 season, according to reports from Queen City Press and The Athletic. It is believed that Miazga and the club are negotiating the terms of his departure.

The news of Miazga's departure is expected to shake up the back line for the match against D.C. United at TQL Stadium. In addition to Miazga, Cincinnati will also be without Samuel Gidi, who is yet to clear concussion protocol. Miazga's departure could be a strategic move to free up salary for other players. The 31-year-old Miazga joined Cincinnati late in the 2022 season and started 10 games that year.

He was named the MLS Defender of the Year in 2023 and played a crucial role in Cincinnati's success, including winning the MLS Supporters' Shield that year. However, Miazga has suffered from injuries in recent years, playing only 16 games in 2024 and 14 out of 22 matches this season. Cincinnati has also made recent signings, such as Julian Malatini and David Doudera, and is still looking to sign more free agents. The team has conceded 51 goals in 22 MLS games, which is the third-highest tally in the league.
