Exclusive: Ex-Rockstar dev gives us the inside scoop on what GTA 6’s Extended Look reveals about its protagonists — ‘Jason Duval is a robot — a Terminator'

The upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6 has sparked numerous speculations about its protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, as revealed by a former Rockstar Games developer, Mike York. York, who worked on GTA 5 and its online version, believes that the newly released Extended Look offers a glimpse into the tone and characters of GTA 6.

According to York, the new game moves away from the hyperreal villains typically found in US crime dramas, such as Michael Corleone, Tony Montana, and Tony Soprano. Jason Duval, the lead male character, is described as moving slowly and methodically, almost like a Terminator, with no emotion. This contrasts with Niko Belic, another character from GTA 4, who was witty and had great lines, making GTA 4 one of York's favorites in the series.

York hopes that Jason's character will evolve to be more engaging and lively, similar to Niko's character. Lucia Caminos, Jason's companion, is portrayed as having a different personality than Jason, appearing more self-contained, uptight, and introspective. She seems to be the one trying to break Jason out of his shell, encouraging him to be more charismatic and fun.

The duo's personality contrast is evident in a scene from the trailer when they are in an elevator discussing their approach to shooting a meth lab. Jason admits he prefers to use a gun, while Lucia responds by telling him to be more charming. York suggests that Lucia may serve as the Yin to Jason's Yang, providing a balance to his personality.

The soundtrack of the Extended Look also reveals more about the characters. While Jason's section uses People Are People by Depeche Mode, Lucia's section uses Devil Woman by Cliff Richard, emphasizing the theme of female empowerment and mutual respect between sexes, which has been largely absent from previous GTA games.

York's experience with Rockstar Games, starting as a developer in 2012 and working on GTA 5 and its online version, adds credibility to his observations about the new game. With the Extended Look being the third official piece of storytelling for GTA 6, it has already garnered over 30 million views on Netflix in just four days.
