Ex-lawmaker backs Wike’s demolition of buildings on waterways

Former House of Representatives member Sam Onuigbo has expressed support for Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, regarding the ongoing demolition of structures obstructing waterways and drainage channels in Abuja. Onuigbo, who is now the President of Globe Legislators International, argued that the well-being of millions of residents should be prioritized over the interests of individuals whose buildings obstruct natural water channels, thereby exposing them to flooding.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Onuigbo stated that the overriding public interest should take precedence in such cases. The FCT administration began the demolition process on Tuesday following renewed flooding in parts of Abuja. Wike had ordered the removal of structures obstructing waterways after inspecting flood-affected areas.

The PUNCH reported that officials subsequently employed tractors to enforce the minister's directive. Onuigbo emphasized that individuals should not be allowed to endanger residents by deliberately erecting structures that obstruct drainage channels.
