Britain's Defence Secretary Wes Streeting declared Friday that the Falkland Islands remain a steadfast British territory, undeterred by Argentine President Javier Milei's recent remarks. Milei, speaking on national television, argued that winds of change were favorable to Argentina's claim over the South Atlantic islands, citing Washington's willingness to reconsider its neutrality in the dispute.

The British overseas territory, known to Argentines as Las Islas Malvinas, was the subject of a 10-week war in 1982. British Defence Secretary Wes Streeting firmly reiterated that the UK's "commitment to the Falklands is absolute and unshakeable." The islanders themselves voted to remain British in a 2013 referendum. The dispute over the islands has resurfaced following US President Donald Trump's threat to influence the matter, and the British-Israeli oil project near the islands, which has angered Argentine authorities.
