Delhi High Court bars foreign medical grads with multi-college degrees from FMGE

In a recent decision with significant implications, the Delhi High Court has upheld the National Medical Commission's (NMC) ban on foreign medical graduates (FMG) with multi-college degrees from taking the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE). The court argued that such qualifications could compromise the quality of medical professionals in the country.

The FMGE is a mandatory exam for Indians and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) who have obtained their medical qualifications abroad and wish to practice allopathic medicine in India. The court stated that fragmented education, where students study at multiple foreign medical colleges, is not in the public interest. The NMC requires foreign medical degrees to be attested by the Indian Embassy or apostilled by the appropriate authority in the issuing country.

The court emphasized that foreign medical institutions must meet acceptable standards and undergo confirmation by the Embassy. The High Court found no reason to interfere with the NMC's decision, highlighting the importance of verifying candidates' qualifications to prevent the use of fake certificates and protect public health.
