Comrades winner returns to Comrades country

George Kusche, the 2026 Comrades Marathon winner, has returned to his hometown of KwaZulu-Natal to explore the province behind the race. Accompanied by his family, Kusche embarked on a five-day adventure in the Midlands and Drakensberg, hosted by the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film. The trip, part of his Comrades prize, offered a chance to experience the destinations he had never visited before, such as the Midlands and Drakensberg.

Kusche, a history buff, especially enjoyed encountering South African history during the trip, including a visit to the Nelson Mandela Capture Site. The Midlands and Drakensberg proved to be a beautiful part of the country, with rolling hills and diverse landscapes. Kusche, who plans to return, expressed his desire to continue improving his marathon time and mastering the Down Run, which he had not yet conquered.

The Comrades Marathon holds a special place in Kusche's heart, as the route between Durban and Pietermaritzburg holds many memories and flashbacks from his debut in 2025 and his record-breaking victory in 2026. Inchanga, where he made the decisive move to win the race, holds particular significance for him. Kusche believes that the communities along the KZN route distinguish Comrades from other races, as many people in South Africa have been watching the race since they were infants.
