Canada’s Fernandez out of U.S. Open after third-round loss to Pegula

New York - Canadian tennis player Leylah Fernandez is out of the U.S. Open after losing to Jessica Pegula in the third round on Friday.

The 23-year-old from Laval, Que., started strongly, breaking Pegula's serve in the first set and building a 5-1 lead. However, Pegula broke back to take the set 6-1. Fernandez managed to get a break in the second set, but Pegula capitalized on another break to lead 5-4 heading into the third set. Fernandez fought back to make it 5-4, but Pegula secured her third break to win 6-3 in the match that lasted two hours and ten minutes.

This marks Fernandez's third-round exit at the U.S. Open. In 2021, she was the runner-up at the tournament. Later that day, Denis Shapovalov was set to compete against Ben Shelton in the men's third-round match. Fernandez is still participating in doubles action at the Grand Slam event and will play alongside Janice Tjen against Erin Routliffe and Aldila Sutjiadi in the second round on Saturday.
