Bundesliga: Why I removed Boniface from Europa League squad – Leverkusen boss, Martinez

Bayer Leverkusen manager Carles Martinez has revealed his decision not to include Nigerian striker Victor Boniface in the club's UEFA Europa League squad. This move came before their Bundesliga match against Union Berlin on Saturday. Despite a promising pre-season following a rough loan spell at Werder Bremen earlier this season, Boniface was not part of the Europa League squad.

At a press conference on Friday, Martinez explained that Boniface had not fully recovered, even though he showed signs of progress during pre-season. Martinez stated, "Two months ago, when we began our preparations," that the Nigerian striker was not ready due to persistent pain and a poor condition of his knee, which was not in good physical shape compared to his teammates.

However, Martinez remains optimistic that Boniface can regain his peak form in the 2026/2027 season, noting that Boniface's knee is responding better overall. The club's manager highlighted that while Boniface's injury is improving, he is not yet fully fit to compete in the Europa League. Martinez expressed his hope that Boniface will continue to improve, saying, "I hope you can inquire about the reason for this decision every week, as Boni continues to improve.

That would be the best outcome for both him and the club." Martinez also mentioned that Boniface could return to the club's European squad if his condition further improves. Boniface will now concentrate on his recovery in the hopes of returning to full fitness.
