BSIFF 2026 puts Ghanaian cinema at heart of festival

The 11th Black Star International Film Festival (BSIFF) will celebrate Ghanaian cinema as its centerpiece in Kumasi for 2026. The decision to emphasize Ghanaian films comes from a recognition of the importance of building a culture where people actively engage with and support African cinema. This year, BSIFF received submissions from 42 countries, but only 11 films ultimately made the cut.

Recognizing that Africa is home to over a billion potential viewers, BSIFF aims to create a strong audience for Ghanaian films within the continent. The festival will feature various sections, including a Ghanaian Showcase, Documentaries, Africa Rising, and Student Showcase. Language is a significant aspect of the festival, as local-language cinema is emphasized to build bridges between the audience and Ghanaian cinema.

In 2026, BSIFF will be held in Kumasi, a city that has played a crucial role in Ghanaian screen culture, particularly through Kumawood and local-language storytelling. The intent behind selecting Kumasi is to encourage filmmakers to interact with audiences outside the traditional festival settings and to treat audience development as seriously as film production.

The festival hopes to inspire Ghanaian filmmakers to think beyond just making films and consider the entire journey of a film, including marketing, distribution, and audience engagement. While BSIFF does not suggest that Ghanaian cinema should turn inward, it encourages filmmakers to stand confidently in their identity, build high-quality stories, and develop a thriving business and audience before inviting the world to watch.
