Bogotá’s Sacred Music Festival Turns 15 With ‘La Concordia’

Bogotá's Teatro Colón inaugurates the 15th International Sacred Music Festival, a month-long exploration of music and spirituality that bridges cultures in a city of contrasts. Over 1,000 artists from 16 nations will perform in 25 venues, from grand cathedrals to intimate cultural spaces. The festival extends to other cities, aiming to deliver music to vulnerable communities affected by conflict and the recent earthquake. The festival's theme, La Concordia, emphasizes bringing people together through music.

The opening concert features a world premiere by French composer Julien Faure, Missa pro Vita et Concordia, which explores life, reconciliation, and coexistence. American violinist Rachel Barton Pine will perform Max Bruch's Kol Nidrei and Violin Concerto No. 1, drawing on Jewish and Romantic traditions, respectively. The festival promises a diverse lineup of performers, including The Tallis Scholars, Belli & Schmeding Duo, and the Karlovy Vary Chamber Choir. Colombian and international institutions will also participate.

The festival has evolved beyond traditional concert halls, incorporating free concerts, talks, artist encounters, and contemplative experiences. Mariana Piotrowska, the festival's director, celebrates the 15th anniversary after navigating pandemic challenges and decentralizing cultural activity in Colombia. The festival's success lies in creating conversations and fostering intercultural dialogue through art.
