BN backs unity govt despite push for earlier GE16, says Zambry

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 4 — Malaysia's Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition remains committed to maintaining a unity government and ensuring political stability, according to its secretary-general Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir. Despite calls for the 16th General Election (GE16) to be held earlier, Zambry emphasized that such requests should not be seen as an indication of BN's confidence in regaining federal power.

He clarified that while Umno and Barisan may desire an earlier election, it does not translate to overconfidence in their victory and formation of the government. Zambry further reiterated the stance of BN's partners, stating that there are no intentions to undermine or bring down the unity government before the announcement of the next general election.

This position holds true in the context of BN's involvement in the Madani government. The comments come after Zahid Hamidi, the BN chairman, expressed support for GE16 being held earlier, arguing that a sooner election would allow the government to seek a new mandate from voters. Zahid also suggested that BN could contest GE16 at the end of the current parliamentary term if it runs its full course. The 15th Parliament is projected to complete its full term on December 18, 2027.
