Excluding bats and birds increased insect-damaged nuts from 6.2% to 10.7%. Higher bat activity was associated with lower insect damage, and natural habitats increased bat abundance and diversity.

The study highlights the importance of natural habitats, comprising around 60% of the landscape, for agricultural production and biodiversity.
