Bank of Ghana warns against misuse of cedi notes and coins

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has issued a stern warning to the public, urging them to refrain from improper use and handling of Ghana cedi notes and coins. The central bank has stated that those found guilty of abusing or defacing the national currency could face legal consequences such as arrest and prosecution. This caution comes as there is an increase in activities such as spraying money at social events, tossing banknotes on the ground, stepping or dancing on them, and using currency to create bouquets, jewelry, and other decorative items.

The BoG emphasized that such practices not only compromise the quality and functionality of Ghana's currency but also undermine its dignity. One particularly egregious act highlighted by the bank is the creation of money bouquets for weddings, birthdays, graduations, and other celebrations using banknotes, which the BoG regards as improper and against the law.

The central bank also cautioned against activities like tearing, crumpling, staining, soiling, writing on, cutting, or otherwise damaging banknotes and coins. Other prohibited actions include using images of Ghanaian currency without authorization from the BoG and trading coins at a value higher than their face value. The Bank of Ghana emphasized that these banknotes and coins are issued exclusively as legal tender and must be handled with care to maintain their condition and usability.

The BoG noted that substantial resources are dedicated to the production and maintenance of the country's currency, urging the public to contribute to its protection. Furthermore, the central bank revealed that it is collaborating with law enforcement agencies to enhance monitoring and take action against individuals involved in prohibited currency-related activities.

The BoG urged individuals, businesses, and institutions to handle Ghana cedi notes and coins responsibly and to report any suspected violations to the relevant authorities.
