Auto Companies Call For Ban On Chinese-Made Cars

An alliance of American automakers has penned a letter to congressional leaders, requesting a permanent ban on the sale, import, and manufacture of Chinese-made cars in the United States. The letter's author, John Bozzella, CEO of the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, accused China's automotive industry of unfair trade practices, including subsidies, intellectual property theft, and surveillance.

Bozzella urged lawmakers to act before the end of the 119th Congress in January, before Chinese automakers could gain a foothold in markets like Europe, Australia, Southeast Asia, Mexico, and South America. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that while the U.S. had not yet experienced the full impact of this threat, it was crucial to enact a ban before adjourning the current session.

The alliance, representing the entirety of the U.S. auto industry, proposes bipartisan legislation to prohibit automakers with more than 15% Chinese ownership from selling vehicles in the U.S. The goal is to send a strong message that China's strategy to dominate global automotive manufacturing will face a national security response from America.
