ASUU rejects tenure extension for UNIOSUN VC

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has objected to Governor Ademola Adeleke's decision to extend the tenure of the university's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Clement Adebooye, by two years. ASUU's Osun State University chapter, led by Dr Wande Olaosebikan, argued that the Osun State University Establishment Law did not permit such an extension, questioning the legal basis for the governor's decision.

Olaosebikan stated that ASUU would not act until they received confirmation on Prof. Adebooye's acceptance of the extension. The union's decision came after a congress where members reviewed the laws governing the university's administration. The controversy arose following the governor's announcement on Monday that he had approved the extension during the inauguration of the reconstituted Governing Council of UNIOSUN in Osogbo.

Governor Adeleke claimed the decision was made for the university's benefit, aiming to strengthen governance, ensure continuity, and prevent a leadership vacuum that could disrupt the institution's administration. He noted that Prof. Adebooye had initially rejected the offer before accepting the additional two years. The development prompted the Osun State House of Assembly to amend the UNIOSUN Establishment Law, passing the Osun State University Establishment Amendment Bill 2026 to provide a legal framework for the extension.

The bill, presented to the House following a letter from the governor dated July 27, 2026, also included provisions for grants and scholarships for students. The amendment effectively approved the governor's action and provided the extension.
