Argentine leader says oil firms working off Falklands face sanctions

Argentina's President Javier Milei warned on Tuesday that he will impose economic sanctions on oil firms operating near the Falkland Islands, a British territory in the South Atlantic. In a national address, Milei stated that recent developments, including potential US reconsideration of neutrality on the matter, bolster Argentina's claim to the islands.

He specifically targeted the Sea Lion oilfield, located about 130 miles from the islands and expected to host exploration work by British and Israeli firms in the coming years. Milei characterized the Sea Lion field as a "clear and present danger" to Argentine sovereignty. This announcement comes amidst the broader dispute over the Falkland Islands' sovereignty, which both countries vehemently contest.

The UK maintains that Falkland Islanders are British citizens with the right to self-determination. Milei, surrounded by his cabinet, revealed plans to introduce a bill in parliament to impose sanctions on energy firms planning to explore the Sea Lion field. He emphasized that Argentina cannot permit the extraction of oil beneath its territorial waters.

The sanctions' specific nature and severity remain unclear. Argentina already has laws enabling restrictions on oil companies if they engage in unauthorized projects on the islands. A 2013 referendum in the Falklands showed overwhelming support for remaining a British overseas territory (99.8% in favor, 3 against). Milei also announced plans for a naval base in Tierra del Fuego, describing the UK as a nation in decline.

The US, under President Trump, has expressed a neutral stance on the islands' sovereignty, a position he has previously indicated could change if the UK increases defense spending. The 1982 war between Argentina and Britain over the Falklands resulted in significant losses on both sides.
