Another big AI ban hits US schools: Los Angeles blocks access to generative AI tools for all students

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has implemented a ban on generative artificial intelligence tools for all students during the 2026-27 school year, limiting their access to such platforms on district-issued devices. This restriction is part of a wider nationwide debate over student access to generative AI platforms in US schools.

Unlike New York City's policy, which focuses on students through eighth grade, LAUSD's restriction applies to students of all ages. The district, the second-largest in the US, is reviewing its approach to AI technology while developing a curriculum to teach students about artificial intelligence and responsible use.
