Andhra Deputy Chief Minister and Environment Minister Pawan Kalyan has instructed the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) to conduct a thorough scientific investigation into water pollution in the Godavari River and associated drains. The State-level task force, led by the Principal Secretary to the Environment and Forest Department and APPCB Member Secretary, was formed in May to tackle the pollution issue in the Godavari.
The task force includes Collectors from four districts - East Godavari, Kakinada, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema, and West Godavari.
According to an official release, the APPCB will gather water samples from the main river, 15 major drains, and 45 smaller drains for scientific analysis to determine the levels and origins of pollution. Additionally, sewage water and untreated industrial waste from 262 gram panchayats and Urban Local Bodies discharging into the Godavari through drains will also be examined during the study.
Pawan Kalyan emphasized that the APPCB will utilize the ₹100-crore fund released in May for Godavari conservation to monitor, study, and address the pollution. The investigation aims to prevent water pollution of the Godavari before the upcoming Godavari Pushkarams-2027.
